One common thing I often see on writing forum or at writing groups is so many writers have never even completed one novel. Instead they work on the same books for months, even years without ever finishing anything. Or they write half a book, lose motivation then move onto something else. This makes me sad as finishing a book is a great feeling. I still feel that way even 12 books later.
So here are 4 tips on how to get your novel finished.
- Keep writing. This is the most important thing. Many writers become disillusioned by writing and simply give up. Keep writing and stick to the current book you’re writing. Don’t move on to something else.
- Make time for writing every day. Try to slot in time for a little writing every day, even if it’s only 10 minutes. By writing very day you’ll get into the habit of writing regularly and writing will become easier.
- Outline. I’m a firm believer in writing an outline. A lot of writers when they’re first starting out don’t have any kin of outline and this is often why a lot of them never finish even one book. By knowing where you’re story is going you’re much more likely to finish it.
- Write fast. I’m a fairly fast writing – both writing by hand and using dictation software. try writing the whole first draft without stopping to go back and make any changes. It’s better to get the words down then worrying about the quality of them. Editing is for changing things.
